Awarded “Best performance of the program new prize 2015” – by Georgian Theatre Critics Association at Tbilisi International Festival of Theater
“Fragile masterpiece” – dancecritic Lars Elton for Budstikka, Bærum, Norway
“Calm and raw. From quite melancholy to muscular explosiveness, choreographer Kari Hoaas hits the mark” – critic Sverre Joakimsen for Finnmark Dagblad, Hammerfest, Norway
“One of the most interesting performances of the festival. The dilemma “to kill or to kill oneself” becomes the essence of the movement solution. And the beauty of the body on stage – the contrast to the pursuance of violence.” – critic Maya Krylova, www.teatral-online.ru, St. Petersburg, Russia
“In an acrobatic and imaginative composition of dance lexicon, Kari Hoaas reminds us of the male quotidian labour that uses (and abuses) the body as a tool and force – She gives us the dimension of the technical dominium of the body. The density and melancholy and the hardness of such labour, but she also gives us humour and joyful and unexpected references to the History of dance. On stage there was a huge craftsmanship to built a strong and delicate piece of dance. It was very muscle, very virtuosic in the interpretation, sometimes surreal or just poetically human, lost in some wandering interior.” – Claudia Galhós, dramaturge and dance scholar, Dansefestival Barents, Hammerfest, Norway. On the desperate edge of now is an evening length dance work conceived for an all male cast, investigating masculinity, physicality and the impact of male cultures; a dance performance about violence, vulnerability, power, powerlessness and men. Through themes of ritual, combat, competition and play, the work investigates collectivity versus the individual. Where lies the blurry line separating friends and foes? Collective and individual?
***What a piece of work is a man? How noble in reason! How infinite in faculties! In form and moving, how express and admirable! In action how like an Angel! In apprehension how like a god! The beauty of the world! The paragon of animals! And yet to me, what is this quintessence of dust?*** – Hamlet, W. Shakespeare
